zen master

About & safety

A quiet place to sit with an AI teacher shaped by the zen tradition.

If you are in danger or thinking of ending your life, please reach a person now. This app is not built for emergencies.

What this is

Come here when you want to calm down, think something through, or learn what zen is. You can talk with the teacher, follow a guided practice, read the day's teaching, keep a journal, or open Stillness, which turns your screen into dim water, slow breath and quiet sound.

What it is not

What it keeps

Your conversations, journal, memories and settings are kept in this browser, and a copy is kept on this app's server so they are not lost if the browser's storage is cleared. The copy belongs to an account held by a cookie in this browser, and needs no name or email. If you sign in with an email address, the same account follows you to your other devices; the address is used only for signing in and, if you subscribe, your subscription. Payments are taken by Polar, which sells the plan for us, and your card never reaches this app. We don't read it, sell it or use it to train models. Settings can download a copy, erase all of it from this browser and the server, or, once you have signed in, delete your account and everything in it on every device.

To answer you, your recent messages, what you wrote about yourself and what the teacher remembers are sent through this app's server to the AI model, and handled by that provider under their terms. The teacher runs on open models hosted by DeepInfra, which does not keep what is sent to it or train on it, though it may keep a small part of requests for a while to fix problems or stop abuse. Your journal is never sent to the model.

When you first sign in, the app asks what brings you here and how much you have meditated; Settings can change the answers. The teacher reads them. The app's keeper sees only how many people chose each answer: never who, and never what you write in your own words.

The first time a browser keeps anything here, Cloudflare Turnstile may check that it is a person rather than a script; usually nothing shows. A sitting you choose not to keep is not saved, here or on the server.

Each message is also checked for signs that you may be in danger, so the app can show where to find help beside the teacher's reply. Only a count of how often that happens is kept, never your words.

To learn how the app is used, it also counts each day which pages are opened and what is done, such as practices begun or Stillness opened. These are totals, with no account, address or words attached, and a browser that sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track is not counted.

If you need help now

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number: 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 112 across Europe and in India, 000 in Australia, 111 in New Zealand.

If you are thinking about suicide or are in emotional crisis, these services are free and confidential:

These numbers were checked when this page was written. If one doesn't connect, call your local emergency number.

You don't have to be sure it's serious enough. Reaching out is enough of a reason. And if someone you know is struggling, sitting with them and helping them make that call is a kindness.
